Rebekah Codlin is a 24 yr old self-taught artist based in Picton, Marlborough. Rebekah works in oil on canvas, graphite and watercolour to produce contemporary realist portraiture.
Rebekah’s artistic career began younger than most, at age 16 she already displayed advanced artistic talent and was driven to become a fine artist. Through experimentation and exploration she began building a portfolio, and by 17 she was committed to becoming a full time artist. She soon began exhibiting her work locally and had immediate success, this led to her first solo show where she sold her first portrait painted at age 17 for $10’000. This attracted a wide audience and collector interest.
“I am compelled to paint people, as I believe no other subject is more complex, emotive and thought provoking than the human being. I paint realism portraits and figurative works in oils and watercolours, with a focus on capturing the inner person using expression, light play and detail. I start with an expression or a feeling in my subject, and the rest of the painting comes together to compliment and emphasize this. It is important to me that every painting evokes connection and a realization of common humanity between the painted and the viewer, and that this connection penetrates barriers with the painting developing more life and complexity in the viewers eye with every viewing, improving with age. I like to capture warmth and depth in my portraits, to hold the attention of the viewer and tell a message open to their interpretation and personal to them.”
Being correspondence schooled, Rebekah had the flexibility to practice fine art, dance and guitar amongst her studies. In addition to painting full time, she also ran a non-profit dance school Street Dance Federation for 2 years with her sister in Blenheim, teaching over 85 students in the evenings, and also taught 40 guitar students weekly.
Rebekah has been exhibited extensively throughout New Zealand and looks forward to exhibiting soon in England and Santa Fe – New Mexico. Her works are held in private collections in New Zealand, Australia, UK, USA, Germany, Canada, New Caledonia, Fiji and Dubai. Rebekah has been selected as a finalist in several competitions and awarded a number of residencies, including a 4 year residency from age 18 with Brancott Estate Winery in Blenheim and is now resident artist at Highfield Estate Winery. Rebekah is an avid supporter of charities and often donates works to fundraising auctions. She is also a big supporter of the arts, regularly giving in-depth advice to beginning artists on how to navigate the art world successfully.
In addition to selling her artworks direct, Rebekah is also represented by Black Door Gallery in Parnell, Auckland, Central Art Gallery in Queenstown and The Gallery Havelock. LA Design, a local house dressing agency also regularly uses her art for high value properties on the market. Rebekahs paintings have been very popular among fine art collectors, decor designers, investors, art enthusiasts and every day people alike.
